If we look in to the modern world, the breeding ground for development, we will always observe that the small-scale business initiatives, or Startups, have played an important role in the course. It is the Startups, who have grown from small to big, and huge, and have earned significant amount of revenue for themselves, as well as the nations as well. It is for the collaboration between Government and Private bodies, who have tied up in enabling aStartup Ecosystem friendly environment, we see a Startup movement throughout the world, and indeed it has been successful.

Securing top positions in the global Startup index, countries like USA, India, Indonesia, United Kingdom, Brazil and other countries have a concrete Startup support mechanism in Public Private Partnership model which has paved their paths to success.Observing this, the Government of Bangladesh was encouraged to initiate a Startup Support activity as such. The Startup support mechanism was absent at the Government level, till now. The ICT advisor to the Hon’ble Prime Minister, Mr. Sajeeb Wazed Joy, along with the ICT Division, hence, came up with the Connecting Startups Bangladesh movement, which is co-owned by the Government and private bodies as well. Here, to build the Startup ecosystem of the country, the Government assigned Bangladesh Hi Tech Park Authority to provide office space and necessary logistical support to the Startups, BASIS to counsel and to groom the Startups by bringing International Accelerators, experts and ensuring best practice, Banglalink to provide a complete digital incubator center, acted together in shaping up a 360 degree support solution to the Startups of the country: Connecting Startups Bangladesh (CSB).

CSB is a filtering initiative for boot Startups and a grooming space as well. This is a mechanism through which we would find out the best Startups of the country, nurture them over the time and enable them to develop and achieve their goals. Through this initiative, we will find out the top 10 and top 50 Startups and will fostertheir acts. This initiative will cultivate the culture of innovation in Bangladesh and will play the driving role to achieve the goal of developing 1000 innovative ICT Products from Bangladesh by 2021. Also, this initiative deeply aligns with the Digital 2021 Vision. The Connecting Startups Bangladesh initiative was launched on 18th October 2015 by Mr. Sajeeb Wazed Joy, Honorable advisor to the Prime Minister, from which the submission period started. 2 types of Startups were identified to apply in this initiative: Idea Stage Startups and Growth Stage Startups. Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS), was thoroughly engaged in this initiative as the submissions went on. The team of Connecting StartupsBangladesh travelled through all the country and hosted a significant number of activation programs in the top educational institutes. The initiative was also leveraged by BASIS by encouraging its member companies as well as the young IT professionals to participate. Utilizing both the digital media and physical activation programs, the submission period ended on 30th January. 437 applications were submitted, in which 123 were Growth Stage Startups and 324 were Idea Stage ones. Members of all these Startups were invited to an orientation programme where they were guided and were given directions to ace through the judging processes of Connecting Startups Bangladesh.

The initial screening was done in 2 levels by the 2 levels of jury panels. For further scrutiny, the eligible Startups were invited to pitch in front of a Jury Board comprising of international and national startup builders, VCs and Accelerators. Through this process, top 100 Startups were identified and were called to conduct their final pitch in front of another jury board. After an extensive process, top 50 Startups were identified and they await for further procedures. The jury board consisted of member from the Government, organizing institutions, global accelerators and investors. The jury board assessed both the global and local needs and conducted their judgment as per the needs. The board was soundly engaged throughout the whole process to ensure top quality and value the merits.

The winning Startups will be placed in the Janata Tower Software Technology Park in Karwan Bazar. The top 10 Startups will be given free dedicated office space and dedicated mentorship and accelerator support for one year, whereas the other top 40Startups will be given provision to use the co-working Space. All these 40Startups will enjoy 3 months worth accelerator support. Successful global Startups and business initiatives will visit and will talk, discuss, guide them. The Startups will also get access to funds, as both local and global investors will be attached to this initiative very keenly. All together, the winning Startups will avail all the required support for their development to become locally successful to become same globally too.
